Dwelling Circus City, The Island, Bristol

DOCH Residencies – Dwelling

Angeliki Meli – DOCH MA Contemporary Circus Practise

Tue 24 October – Fri 27 October 12:00 AM

VENUE: THE ISLAND

Thursday 27th 8pm (30mins)

by Angeliki Meli
The circus apparatus is this space, in which the circus artist grows up and spent most of their time. What turns this space in to a space of intimacy, in to a dwelling, is the memories, the smell, the personal freedom of expressing our selves inside it and the desire of returning.

It is the Balkan sound that still exists between the mountains, the waving of the threads, the grotesque body that has been shaken between the ground and the sky.

During her residency in the building of island Angeliki is trying to expand this intimacy space between her and her discipline and turn it in into a place of being, into a dwelling.

Program (Tuesday – Wednesday- Thursday)
Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: 17.00-19.00 this is not the right nose: invitation to participants to create with the help of Angeliki the shape of their nose
Wednesday 25th +Thursday 26th: 12.00-14.00 this is not the right rope: invitation to participants to be part of the construction of a new rope (aka connector)

Thursday only 20.00-20.30 performance, what comes out of the nose

All the days are part of an ongoing process that tries to understand where the inspiration is coming from.

Straps with Augusts

Augusts Dakteris is an internationally acclaimed circus performer. He graduated from the NCCA (Circus Space) in 2012 and has toured around the world with a number of companies; including NoFitState Circus’ Bianco and as stunt double for Alexander Skarsgard in the Legend of Tarzan.

10am – 1.30pm Sat & Sun
This 2 day workshop will be tailored to individual’s skill level:
We will look at the importance of good warm up technique, postural alignment, performing condition and preparatory exercises with perfect technique. These are the necessary foundations for faster development and injury prevention within your training.

We will work through fundamental positions and movements before going through step by step progressions that will help you to achieve your goals: Often important steps are skipped when trying to learn new tricks which can lead to frustration and slow development.

This workshop will be focused mainly on proper technique and clean lines. Within the workshop we will learn about efficiency of effort and muscle control: Straps is a strength based discipline but often people use more effort than needed, leading unnecessary early fatigue.

We will also look at proper cool downs and stretches to prevent injury.

In summery this workshop will help you to make your training safer and more efficient while having a lot of fun! Much of the work we do can also be applied to you training in other disciplines.

Prerequisites: Participants must be able to do 5 pull ups or chin ups, invert and perform a full skinning the cat on any piece of equipment.

Ticket Price: £75 (link to follow soon)

Acrobalance, The Island, Bristol

Acrobalance

Acrobalance, or Partner Acrobatics, is an ancient circus discipline where two, or more people, carry each other in different poses and positions. It utilizes well-honed techniques, rather than strength, to transition into these poses. A great feature of Acrobalance is that all body-shapes are perfect.
Small people will have an advantage when being lifted and larger people when lifting. People in the middle are fortunate in that they can excel at both. In certain tricks, it is entirely possible to carry double your weight, and one need not be strong, flexible, or in amazing shape to practice Acrobalance. However, Acrobalance will let you achieve all of those things with regular practice!

And on top of that, it is amazingly fun!

Level: All

The Teacher:
Nemo D’Qrill, aka. The Great Dane, received his initial training in AFUK (The Academy of
Unrestrained Creativity) and has taught Acrobalance in Denmark, Germany, Italy, and South Korea.
