Every Doll Has Its Day
October 5, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 6:00 pmFree
Every Doll has its Day is an exhibition documenting what happens when grown-ups play with dolls. Using sculpture, photography, print and moving image to create a visual narrative, it showcases how two artists respond to each other when playfulness and seriousness are not separate. It explores the idea that dolls are more than a toy and playing is much more than the domain of children. Everyone knows what a doll is, however, when we talk about dolls in the
western world we are often referring to them as a toy and playing is the domain of children. In other parts of the world they are viewed with much more significance, they are important sacred objects and there is a crossing over and blending between a toy and the sacred object. Dolls can blur the boundary between play and ritual, cause the inanimate to become animate and stimulate the imaginary and spiritual world. By creating changes through play it can be possible
to create changes which become tangible in the real world.
Made in the city but brought to life in natural places, the dolls articulate both the tension between these locations, each with their own distinct culture and aesthetic, and how we can feel deeply connected to multiple locations. The concept of play and the real world leaking into each other is explored through a series of photographs which also function as guide to the self: a
manifesto that reclaims Puritan names, such as Hope, Faith, and Unity as a form of self-enquiry.
It explores how we construct meaning in our lives and navigate between the material and the immaterial, the visible and the invisible. Humans have created dolls in every culture throughout our history, showing that they are a way of expressing a culture’s beliefs and values. Every Doll has its Day hopes to contribute to these
ideas, exploring the dolls multiple and complex significance as symbols, often intertwined with spirituality, ritual, communal and personal identities.
