Herbert was born Germany.  He earned a degree in stage dance and choreography from the Amsterdam University for the Arts.  He continued his training in New York City with Alvin Ailey and Martha Graham dance schools.

Herbert spent many years dancing with Tanzatelier (Sebastian Prantl) in Vienna, Austria as well with the A.L.M. dance company in Graz Austria.  He has also danced in many industrial shows throughout Germany and France.  His choreography has won awards at the Kaliz Poland Dance Festival.   After moving to Cologne, Germany, Herbert began working in performance art through dance movement.  He performed and choreographed for Pollman’s Cologne and Position Dance.  He has also choreographed for various dance schools throughout Nordrhein Westfahlen.

Herbert has taught throughout the central Germany area—primarily in Cologne and Düsseldorf.  His main teaching styles are the Martha Graham as well as Lester Horton techniques.  He believes in instilling a strong core-based technique to encourage a dancer to pursue many different styles an to continue dancing for many years without injury.

Before relocating to Bristol with his partner, he was and still is performing with a performance art group in Cologne, Düsseldorf and Berlin, Germany.  His creation of the Stock und Stein Project (Stick and Stone Project) interweaves the artistically polished branches from trees, architectural stones from the Rhein river and the classically trained human form creating a unique type of dance expression.   In May, Herbert will premiere a new dance piece for the Bristol Opera’s production of Cavalleria Rusticana.

There are markers on the floor to help us keep a distance.
Classes are limited to 10 participants +teachers.
There are 1 hour gaps between classes to air the room and wipe surfaces.
Windows will be opened / fans used.
There will be hand sanitizers at the door.
Long basin arm taps in bathrooms which you can turn on and off using your wrist or elbow.

ON ARRIVAL
Please use hand sanitizer provided or wash your hands as soon as you enter the building. Wear Masks in communal areas – corridors and toilets.

HOW WILL WE DANCE?
The markers on the floor will help us spread out and keep a 2m distance at all times. If we do ‘travelling’ dance steps please follow our instructions carefully, as we may lead you from the corners of the room rather than straight across as usual. And have longer gaps between each move etc.
It is essential we work together to keep a 2m distance at all points.

FILMING IN THE STUDIO
A computer will be set up during sessions for Zoom, and although will be mainly pointed at the teacher, it might catch other participants on camera.  Please let us know in advance if this is a concern for you and we will do our best to set up the camera with a blind spot.

WHAT TO BRING
Comfortable light weight clothing that covers as much skin as possible. A bottle of water. Mask for communal areas. Footwear: Trainers/ dance shoes (no bare feet in the studio until further notice). If you are dancing in another pair of shoes, please bring a bag to put ‘outside’ shoes in to lessen risk of transmission.

Avoid changing in and out of clothes at the venue if possible HOWEVER if using public transport, it is safer to change out of sweaty clothes before traveling. Avoid placing sweaty clothes on surfaces. Please wipe down any surfaces you touch (there are cleaning products provided).

FEELING UNWELL?
If you are concerned about any symptoms before attending, please stay at home (you can join us on Zoom).
If you show symptoms after attending please email/ phone us urgently, and we will contact the other members of the bubble to isolate & follow advice.

VeraFlow classes at The Island

VeraFlow with Emily Fry

VeraFlow is a dance and flexibility class which uses dynamic stretching patterns, balance and stability challenges to mobilise and tone the full body. Stretching is an often-overlooked aspect of fitness, but it can be done in a fun and active way, relieving stress and tension, leaving you feeling amazing and refreshed!

The choreography is set to expressive music, some of which you may recognise. It may challenge your coordination, but many of the tracks will remain for a few weeks to give you the chance to familiarise and master them.

Class also ends with a mindfulness section, an increasingly popular technique for de-stressing and setting the mind at ease. Whilst the class is not strictly a yoga programme, it brings some common benefits and is ideal for those looking for a way to begin their flexibility journey.

Give it a try, the feeling it gives you can’t be described!
Level: You don’t need to be flexible; we do this to become more flexible and
everyone starts somewhere. No dance experience or ability necessary – it’s all about the feeling dance gives you!

**PLEASE NOTE: you will need to bring an exercise mat (or a towel/blanket) for  your
comfort, some water, and it is recommended that layers are worn for the cooldown**

Thick jumpers and/or blankets are necessary for the mindfulness section.

You can wear anything comfortable that you can move freely in (stretchy bottoms!) and usually class is done barefoot or in socks, if you are comfortable you won’t slip.

Class is led by Emily Fry, a fitness instructor for 10 years with a broad dance background,
training in a variety of fitness programmes to date, and a choreographer for the VeraFlow Programme.

£7 per class (in person or online), or book an online session via MoveGB.

Booking is essential, prior to 8pm Monday night to receive a link for the online format or a risk assessment summary for in person attendance (limited capacity, first come first serve)
